New York state chooses Quebec
The State of New York has just granted the largest export contract ever made by Hydro Quebec. In fact, it has been confirmed that from 2025, Hydro Quebec will supply nearly 10.4 terawatt hours of electricity to the New York State, which represents the electricity consumption of a million households. Fossil fuels currently account for nearly 85% of the region's electricity supply while the state wants renewable energies to be in the order of 70% of its energy consumption by 2030.
Hydro-Quebec did not wish to reveal the potential revenues of this important agreement, but they could represent tens of billions of dollars. According to Ms. Lynn St-Laurent, spokesperson for Hydro Quebec, this contract will allow the State of New York to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 3.9 million metric tonnes, the equivalent of the withdrawal of 44 % of the vehicles currently circulating in New York. She confirms that this is a win-win situation:
“It's a huge climate gain,” she adds. Greenhouse gases know no borders; what is good for our neighbors is also good for Quebecers. ".
It is obviously with great pride that the Prime Minister, Francois Legault, reacted to the news. He describes the agreement as a big step forward for Quebec, but also for the planet and adds that this contract allows us to gradually realize the desire to become the green battery of Northeast America.
There is no doubt that Hydro Quebec will be able to continue supplying Quebecers, even with the signing of such a contract. The necessary energy is available in sufficient quantity and allows us to carve out a place of choice in terms of renewable energies supplier . Hopefully this agreement will inspire many to share their own renewable energies and help us achieve our GHGs reduction targets as quickly as possible.
