Collège Jean de la Mennais

Collège Jean de la Mennais

The Brothers of Christian Instruction congregation was founded in France in 1819 by two Breton priests, Jean-Marie de la Mennais and Gabriel Deshayes, wishing to provide education to young people in the Revolution aftermath, according to the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was in 1886 that the Brothers arrived in Quebec and took charge of an establishment in Chambly. In 1888, they were in La Prairie where they were entrusted with the management of the school on Saint-Ignace Street. In 1890, on the land of the commune itself, the first construction of the vast complex was built which would house, successively or simultaneously, the Brothers mother house, the juniorate, the novitiate, the normal school, and the boarding school. The Collège Jean de la Mennais was created in 1972 and has maintained and developed the heritage highlighted by its predecessors for more than eighty years. And today's Brothers, assisted by many quality collaborators, want to continue the work undertaken by their elders for the benefit of adolescents in the region.
